MADRAS MUSIC MELA 2001

MEET KALA RATNA MANI KRISHNASWAMI

Sangeeta Kalanidhi Mani Krishnaswami is one of the senior women vocalists of today. Having undergone training under several stalwarts, she is known for her adherence to tradition. The Rasika Ranjani Sabha honoured her with the title of Kala Ratna during the Chennai music season. Carnatica congratulates her on this occasion. Pushkala Ramakrishnan in a brief chat with Mani Krishnaswami.

Guru(s):

I have undergone training under about 6-7 Gurus during the course of my music studies. Musiri Subramanya Iyer was the Guru who taught me kutcheri paddhati or bani. I generally stick to his bani which is strong in sampradaya sangeetam. I have studied in Kalakshetra. It was the institution that taught me not only to be a good musician but also to be a good human being. I am still a disciple of Chengelpet Ranganathan from whom I get most of my doubts clarified.

Favorite Vocalist(s) from the past: I admire many different aspects in all the great stalwarts. I often listen to the music of Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, Voleti Venkateswarulu, Maharajapuram Viswanatha, Nedunuri Krishnamurti, Alathur brothers, T Brinda and M L Vasantakumari. In particular, I have great admiration for MLV’s music. On the whole, I search for good things in the music of all great musicians, just as a bee goes in search of honey from different beautiful flowers.

Favorite Instrumentalist(s) from the past: I admire Narayana Iyengar and Mannargudi Savitri Ammal's Gotuvadyam, Karaikudi Sambasiva Iyer’s Vina, Mali’s Flute, Chowdiah, Papa Venkatramiah and Dwaram Venkatasami Naidu’s Violin, Rajaratnam Pillai and Sheikh Chinna Moulana’s Nagaswaram.

Favorite Vocalist(s) of the present day: My answer for this question cannot be exhaustive. I have an endless list of favorites. I can only mention a very few if you insist - K V Narayanaswami, B Rajam Iyer, Vairamangalam Lakshminarayanan, P S Narayanaswami, Balamuralikrishna, Vedavalli, Suguna Purushottaman and so on.

Favorite Instrumentalist(s) of the present day: Again an endless list of which a few are Lalgudi Jayaraman, T N Krishnan, Sikkil Sisters, Ramani and others. While answering this question, I recollect all the wonderful accompanists who have accompanied me on various concerts and made them successful. Almost all the leading artists have accompanied me. I would like to express my gratitude to all of them at this memorable juncture.

Favorite Composer(s): I can't make distinctions between composers as they have embossed their own greatness in each of their compositions. I have been blessed to have been a direct disciple of the great Mysore Vasudevachar. Apart from the regular compositions, I also like Kavadi Chindu, Bhajans etc.

Favorite Raga(s): Ragas like Todi, Kambhoji, Varali, Saveri and Poorvikalyani.

Favorite Venue(s): Music Academy, Krishna Gana Sabha, Mylapore Fine Arts Club.

Favorite Hobbies:

Listening to music, cooking, looking for good things around me, which I learnt at Kalakshetra.
