MAMBALAM SISTERS - CATERING TO POPULAR TASTES |
The Mambalam Sisters, Chitra and Vijayalakshmi's concert at Mylapore Fine Arts Club on December 24, 2001 was fast-paced and designed to cater to popular tastes. In that respect, the concert could be taken as reasonably successful. Prime importance was provided to neraval and kalpanaswara aspects, but were rushed through without giving reasonable gap for the prayoga-s to register in the minds of the rasikas. The Mridangist, Kumbakonam Ramakrishnan was pro-active, and blasted his way through, although he was following the music with his past experience in accompanying these singers. The kritis were also subjected to noisy intrusion. In fact, at times, it was difficult to distinguish who was leading whom! The Morsing sessions by Nadeswaran came as a relief. The only consolation was the solidity provided by R Hemalata in her violin accompaniment. Also, her alapana renditions were sweet and musically rewarding. The sisters' choice of kritis and the presentation of the same were received well. They included Sri Jalandhara (Gambheeranata, Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar), Chandram bhaja (Asaveri, Dikshitar)), Marivere (Shanmukhapriya, Patnam Subramanya Iyer), Tunai purindarul (Suddhahindolam / Varamu, Papanasam Sivan), Srisubramanyaya namaste (Kambhoji, Dikshitar) and Nandananda (Ahirbhairav, Oothukkadu Venkata Kavi). They announced the last as having been set to tune by Kalyanapuram Aravamudan, the Harikatha exponent. Chitra took up the alapana of Shanmukhapriya and rendered it well. Vijayalakshmi did her part well in the Kambhoji suite. Ratings: Sruti
