Nritya Choodamani conferred on Urmila Satyanarayana

Danseuse Urmila Satyanarayanan was conferred the title of Nritya Choodamani of the Sri Krishna Gana Sabha at the inauguration of the Sabha's 46th Art and Dance Festival, the Pongal Nagaswara Isai Festival and the 21st Natya Kala Conference on December 12, 2001.

The award, which was presented by Sarada Hoffman, also carried a cash award of Rs 25,000, donated by industrialist P Obul Reddy.

The Bharatanatyam awardee was felicitated by noted danseuse Anita Ratnam, Convenor of the Natya Kala Conference. Ratnam said Urmila was a dedicated danseuse who was known for her hard work. Anita said she was felicitating a danseuse for the third year running and cautioned the awardees of their responsibility and accountability. Urmila must be conscious of the heavier burden she would have to carry as an accomplished singer, in view of the award today, Anita said. The arena of fine arts had a special place. She recalled that despite the paralysis which gripped the US after the September 11 attacks, all sections of the society urged the artistes to resume their work from September 13 itself, emphasising the importance of culture and the sobering effect it had on society, and providing a soothing effect to troubled minds, Anita Ratnam said.

The discussions at the Natya Kala Conference at the Sri Krishna Gana Sabha premises in T Nagar would begin from December 15, Anita said, and urged dance students to attend the conference in large numbers.

Replying to the felicitations, Urmila said she regarded the title and the honour bestowed on her as a big occasion in her career, and thanked her guru K J Sarasa, her parents, her husband, in laws and also her daughter for helping her reach this milestone.

R Yagnaraman and S Balasubramaniam of the Krishna Gana described the arrangements of the Sabha for this year's festival.
