KAPALI FINE ARTS AND NUNGAMBAKKAM CULTURAL ACADEMY FESTIVALS INAUGURATED

    
The highlight of the inaugural function of the Kapali Fine Arts Festival was the honouring of multi-faceted musician-musicologist and painter, S Rajam, with the award of Sangeeta Jyoti. The Sabha also honoured popular mridangist Tiruvarur Bhaktavatsalam with the title of Laya Jyoti, danseuse Manjula Lusti Narasimhan of Geneva with Natya Jyoti and the veteran Bharatanatyam guru, Ranganayaki Jayaraman with Natyacharya. It was indeed heartening to see the hall packed for an inaugural function. 

S Rajam in his speech emphasised the point that Sabhas ought to nurture young talents. Tiruvarur Bhaktavatsalam, whose thanking speech was filled with interesting anecdotes, expressed his happiness at being honoured along with a veteran like S Rajam. Manjula Lusti Narasimhan and Ranganayaki Jayaraman also thanked the Sabha for the honour. 

     

The other dignitaries on the dais included Mr. Valdimir Zhakharov, Director, Russian Cultural Centre, Mrs. Y G Parthasarathy, Dean of PSBB Schools and Mrs. Ranjana Kumar, CMD, Indian Bank. 

While R Subramaniam, President of Kapali Fine Arts welcomed the gathering, R Sundararaman, Secretary of Kapali Fine Arts proposed the vote of thanks. 

The function was followed by a dance performance of Nitya Venkateswaran of San Jose, who is a disciple of Vishal Ramani.

Title for Sudha Raghunathan

The title of Sangeeta Kala Siromani was conferred on Carnatic vocalist Sudha Raghunathan by the Nungambakkam Cultural Academy Trust at the inauguration of the Trust's 32nd Anniversary celebrations and the Fine Arts Festival in Chennai on 6th December 2001.

The function was presided over by the Chennai Kendra president of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, K S Bhaktavatsalam at the Rama Rao Kala Mandap.

The festival was inaugurated by former director of Doordarshan Kendra A Natarajan.

The title of Nritya Kala Siromani was conferred on Sreekala Bharat, while Marina received the Nataka Kala Siromani title.

Among those who felicitated the awardees were Lalgudi G Jayaraman, danseuse Padma Subramanyam, and dramatist Poornam Viswanathan.

The function was followed by a Bharatanatyam performance by Sreenidhi Harini and R Shanmukhapriya. The festival featuring several eminent musicians will be on till January 10, 2002.

Carnatica Archival Centre team felicitated

Sangeetalayam, the recently founded Sabha of low-profile but highly energetic organiser, K Y R Appadurai, honoured the Carnatica Archival Centre (CAC) team and Dr. V V Srivatsa in a function held at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Chennai on December 3, 2001. The CAC team consisted of its founders, young musicians K N Shashikiran and S Sowmya, and advocate Mohan Parasaran. R Krishnaswamy, President, Narada Gana Sabha, presided over the function while A Natarajan, former Station Director of Doordarshan was the Chief guest. The honourees were felicitated with a silver plaque, shawl and a garland. The function was followed by a vocal duet concert of K N Shashikiran and P Ganesh, accompanied by V V Srinivasa Rao (Violin) and B Ganapatiraman (Mridangam).
