MADRAS MUSIC MELA 2001

Did you know that Kalarasana is the only prominent Sabha in Chennai that has music concerts during the season alone? Its Secretary, Mr. S R Srinivasan in a short but candid interview with Carnatica...

  • When was Kalarasana started?

The Sabha was started on September 16, 1977. In December '83, we started conducting concerts for our members. Till then we used to organise dramas and cinema shows only.

  • Who are the founders of the Sabha?

The founder President of our Sabha is Ln. S Parameswaran. Since the Sabha's inception I have been the Secretary, and we work as a team.

  • Any particular reason for starting the Sabha?

As I said earlier, our Sabha is not exclusively for music. It started as an entertainment club with a few members who enjoyed dramas. We wanted entertainment to reach middle class people. Other than this there is no particular reason for starting the Sabha.

  • What are the general objectives of Kalarasana?

Sincere work is our objective. We give importance to drama and cinema. Only during the December Music season we conduct a music concert series just so that our members also have exposure to music. We did not want our music-loving members to hop from Sabha to Sabha to listen to concerts.

  • What is the award that you give and what does the prize comprise?

We do not give any award to any musician as we don't believe in it. However, we thank all the artists for their excellent co-operation as we can't run without it.

  • Do you have any novel concerts or concepts for the season this year?

We will be featuring Malladi brothers for the first time this year. We have a dance-drama by Padmaja Suresh on the theme 'Navadarsanam'. We will also be having Ghatam Karthick's "Heart Beat" ensemble.
