SIKKIL GURUCHARAN - PROMISING FUTURE |
It is indeed heartening to find a young musician like Sikkil Gurucharan taking to musical niceties and sowkhya bhava rather than the fast and popular track. His rendition of kritis, grasp of their rakti bhava, his kalapramana and capacity to anoint his music with grace was noteworthy, and created a very aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. The Dharmavati alapana in his concert for the Mylapore Fine Arts club on December 25, 2001, carried this gracefulness, as it was filled with long pauses in the jeeva (life-giving) swaras. The alapana was also impressive for its aesthetic prayoga-s. The kalpanaswaras were rendered enchantingly with precision. Gurucharan's choice of kritis were Ninnukori (Mohana Varnam), Ganapatiye (Kharaharapriya, Papanasam Sivan), Needayarada (Vasantabhairavi), Parandhamavati (Dharmavati), Giripriyam (Kadanakutoohalam) and Dasarathi (Todi). Swaras could have been avoided for Ganapatiye as it seemed to intrude on the peaceful mood he had created with his beautiful rendition of the song. Todi alapana and the kriti were rushed through due to want of time. This created a little blemish in an otherwise wonderful performance. It is quite natural for a youngster to make mistakes in planning, but he can be more careful in future. The violinist, Nagai Sriram's rendition of Dharmavati and Todi registered well. Trivandrum Balaji's support to the concert was a mini-revelation. He lifted the atmosphere with graceful theka-s and mohra-s, and with his smooth accompaniment. The Tani Avartanam was short, firm and precise. A sunaada mridangam indeed! Ratings: Sruti
