GAYATRI VENKATARAGHAVAN - REPLETE WITH SUKHA BHAVAM |
In her short duration concert
(1 1/4 hours) for Narada Gana Sabha on December 16, 2001, Gayatri
Venkataraghavan did full justice to her part in planning and presentation.
She possesses a sweet and bhava-laden voice, which could traverse all the
3 octaves effortlessly. This makes it easier for her to linger on notes
and give long karvais as also to bring out the lakshana prayoga-s of ragas.
The accompanists, Anayampatti Venkatasubramanyam (Violin) and K S Ramana (Mridangam),
however left much to be desired.
Gayatri took two ragas for elaboration - Vachaspati and Kharaharapriya - and both registered very well. The respective kritis, Paratpara (Adi, Papanasam Sivan) and Rama nee samana (Roopaka, Tyagaraja) were also rendered with poise. She sang a rare kriti of Syama Sastri, Nannubrova rada, in Janaranjani. Her diction depicted her understanding of the kritis and their bhava as envisaged by the composers. Taking up neraval at the Charanam line 'Paluku paluku' in Kharaharapriya, she did an excellent job using rakti prayoga-s in her phrasings. In general, her neraval exposition brought out her manodharma in a clear manner, and was different from the routine, memorised and high-speed portrayal displayed by artistes in junior slots these days. However, Gayatri needs to be more precise in her swarakalpana. Also, there is no need to take it up in all the kritis. It is a moot point whether Gayatri should be featured in the junior slots. In fact, she possesses the required talent and potential to be placed in middle-level slots. A true rasika only hopes that this young artiste will not start catering to popular tastes, but will work on improving her own manodharma and providing quality music. Concert effect: 80 % in spite of negligible side support Estimated audience: About 90-100 people in Narada Gana Sabha Mini Hall - Deelen |
