MEET SANGEETA KALA JYOTI TIRUVARUR BHAKTAVATSALAM |
|
One of the front-ranking Mridangists of today, Tiruvarur Bhaktavatsalam was born on November 25, 1956, in a musically-inclined family. He made his debut on mridangam at the age of nine. Since then he has been a much-sought after accompanist, having accompanied 2 generations of artistes all over the world. His energetic and enthusiastic style of play has made him very popular among both musicians and rasikas. Kapali Fine Arts honoured him with the Sangeeta Kala Jyoti on 6th December 2001. Carnatica congratulates him on this award. |

Guru: |
I learnt vocal music from my mother T R Anandavalli and Mridangam from my maternal uncle Tiruvaiyyar Krishnamurti, who was an AIR artiste in Pondicherry. |
Favorite Vocalist from the past: | Old is Gold. All musicians in the past were very great; each style was unique. |
Favorite Instrumentalist form the past: | There have been several instrumental styles, each unique in their own way. In Mridangam for example, we have the Pudukottai style, the Tanjavur style and so on. |
Favorite Vocalist of present day: |
Everybody is talented and sings well. If youngsters take the advice of other great musicians and follow them, it would be even more wonderful. |
Favorite Instrumentalist of present day: | Same with instrumentalists. |
Favorite Composer: | Tyagaraja who was born in Tiruvarur, which is also my birth place. A concert will not be complete if Tyagaraja's compositions are not sung. |
Favorite Raga: |
Ghana ragas, rakti ragas like Todi, Sankarabharanam, Kambhoji and light ragas like Desh, Sindhubhairavi, Behag and Sivaranjani. |
Favorite Venue: |
The venue does not matter actually. Only the mike system should be good. |
Favorite Hobby: |
Reading books. Praying and teaching students are my other favorite activities, which cannot be termed as hobbies. As a teacher, I learn a lot by teaching my students. |
