tour of the monuments of silicon valley 2010

augmented reality application for tour

The video here is a demonstration of an application that is designed for the iPhone and iPad. The piece is a tour of a Superfund site in Silicon Valley.

The image of the factory seen through the phone would be the camera image from the phone seen in real-time. As the viewer moves the phone around the space a sound recording is played based on the GPS location of the user. In addition the scrolling text at the bottom of the screen recounts factual details from the history of the site.

The compass at the top indicates direction the viewer is looking. The "zone" information is an indicator of what particular place in the site contains sound and images. Within one site there may be multiple zones. The sound and text will change if a viewer enters a different zone within the site. For example Superfund site AMD 915 has three zones each with its own GPS location. Building 915 (shown in this video), the San Miguel School, and the area of the undergound filter pumps. As the viewer moves around the site, different sound/image/text will play based on the zone.

The compass moves as the viewer pans the device. At certain points along the path the indicator in the compass will turn red. This indicates that the viewer can point the device toward the ground. The sound playing will interupt and a new sound relating to the "underground" image will play. New text and images are displayed. The indicator on the right turns red when the furthest point "below" ground is reached. The viewer cannot tilt the device any further.

The viewer can tilt the device up at any time. The "undergound" sound will stop and the image will disappear. The previous sound and text will play from the point where the viewer tilted the device.
