The Future is All Smiles 2001

Single channel video

This piece was created for a video screening entitled Human Discontinued. The screening was an exploration the concept of "post-human" from the point of view of scientists and artists. In this video I held a smile to the song Smile for its entire length. I then superimposed the names of antidepressants over my face. Through this work I reflect on a future where all disorders and disturbing emotions are medicated. Will we all live with a permanent smile pasted on our face?
