Questionaire

1. When did you first think about emigration? What was the last "drop" that made you decide to emigrate?

2. What did the "fifth line" mean to you in Russia? Did you consider yourself "Jewish"? What did it mean to you before and after emmigration?

3. What difficulties did you experience when you applied for immigration (OVIR, spravkas, harrassment, silence to friends.)?

4. Remeber the rituals of exile-- farewell parties, letter-writing and collective reading of the letters from abroad, etc.?

5. What was the day of departure like?

6. What were your first impressions of America? "What was your "American Dream" before you came here? How was it different/similar to reality?

7. Desribe your American home, your work, and hobbies? What was your attitude to American leisure, entertainment, TV and film?

8. Did your view of America change over the years? How so?

9. Comment on immigrant language and humor. Tell your favorite jokes.

10. If you have children, what role did they play in you decision to leave? Do you think your children are "too American" or not enough? So you linsist on them improving their Russian, or follow Jewish traditions?
